History of Seton

St. Andrew High School opened in Richmond on September 4, 1899 by Rt. Rev. Francis A. Roell. For the first 13 years, the classes met in the old parish school building. The present building was built in 1912. The picture at the bottom of this web page is from the groundbreaking. The first class consisted of 18 boys and 10 girls. For the first 20 years the school was run by a lay principal named Joseph M. Richter. After 1919 the sisters of St. Francis from Oldenburg were in charge of the school. The school tragically closed in the year 1936.

Under the direction of Rev. Todd Riebe, efforts began over eight years ago to explore the possibility of opening a Catholic High School in the former St. Andrew High School Building. After years of study and fundraising, renovation was completed in the summer of 2002. And after an absence of 66 years, a Catholic High School was opened in Richmond, Indiana. Seton Catholic High School opened its doors in the Fall of 2002 to 85 students from 7th to 9th grade. This miracle required the sacrifice of the people from all three parishes in Richmond as well as others in the community that desired a Christian-based high school in Richmond. It is our fervent prayer that Seton Catholic High School will continue its ministry of quality academic education in a faith-based environment well into the future.
